Göteborg Class Corvette
Multi-mission with pioneering waterjet propulsion
Fast Attack Craft with Corvette Capability
The Göteborg class corvette is a versatile and agile surface combatant with legacy from the famous SPICA class Missile Fast Attack Craft (FAC-M) built at Kockums in the 1970s. Göteborg represents the 4th generation SPICA combatant and is as such well adapted to a wide range of missions; surface attack, patrol and anti-submarine warfare - ASW. Despite its relatively small size (57 metres), which is indeed more comparable to fast attack craft, this corvette is fitted with capabilities that surpass other corvettes in several aspects.
Pioneer in waterjet propulsion
The Göteborg class was the first vessels in the Swedish Navy to be equipped with waterjet propulsion - a choice that originated from the 1980s that saw numerous submarine intrusions in Sweden's territorial waters. As the Göteborg class was to have ASW capabilities, the requirement for a system with favourable acoustics, shallow draft and high turning rate inevitably led to waterjet propulsion.
Four corvettes were delivered to Swedish Navy in 1990-1993, all named after Swedish cities; K21 Göteborg, K22 Gävle, K23 Kalmar and K24 Sundsvall.
