Design work on a standard version of SAM 3 has started. This is expected to be complete within about twelve months. Thomas Johansson has been appointed project manager.
Several countries have expressed considerable interest in SAM3 and plans for a cooperation venture are well advanced. SAM 3 was presented by a Kockums team at the major IMDEX Asia 2009 international maritime defence exhibition in Singapore, proving a great success. The remote-operated minesweep attracted a lot of interest.
Trials to determine SAM 3’s capacity to withstand shockwaves generated by detonating mines were conducted in Finland’s outer archipelago in autumn 2008. The trials were extremely comprehensive, the final detonations in the series being extremely powerful and triggered in close proximity to the vessel. SAM 3 passed with flying colours. Prior to trials in Finland, SAM 3 was subjected to a tough series of trials in Holland. Sweden, Finland and Holland have namely carried out joint trials on the next-generation SAM 3.
SAM 3 is an unmanned, remote-operated minesweep, earlier versions of which have enjoyed success on the export market. Now the next-generation SAM3 is here.
