Kockums CEO comments submarine decision in Spring budget

Posted Wednesday, April 14, 2010

In its Spring budget proposal, the Swedish Government has given the green light to go ahead with construction of a Next Generation Submarine (NGS). As well as the construction of two completely new submarines, two Gotland-class submarines are to be upgraded.

“Given the fact that we are already engaged on the initial design phase for these new submarines, the decision does not come as a complete surprise. This said, it is nevertheless a great day for Kockums,” notes Kockums CEO Ola Alfredsson.

Kockums’ new generation submarine represents the very latest in naval technology. It will be designed to meet the needs of current and rapidly changing security policy. Among other things, the submarine’s intelligence-gathering role will be enhanced through refined stealth technology, enabling it to observe and listen to what is happening over a wide area, while remaining undetected. It is designed for extreme operational efficiency in the Baltic and other shallow or ‘littoral’ waters.

The strategic significance of the Baltic is growing all the time, in pace with the increasing level of commercial activity and travel volumes in the region. The planned underwater gas pipeline is just one of several factors that will draw growing global attention to Sweden’s coastal waters. It brings into focus Sweden’s need for naval defence systems for monitoring, surveillance and intelligence gathering.

“The NGS project represents a major investment in terms of Swedish defence capability. It signals the Swedish Government’s clear determination to maintain and develop the country’s national capability in leading-edge naval technology,” states Kockums CEO Ola Alfredsson.

In the light of this positive announcement, Kockums now seeks to strengthen the organization by recruiting new staff. Among others, we seek systems and development engineers for positions in Malmö and Karlskrona.
